Students Get Buzzy at EcoBuzz!     **NEW Art and Photography Below!

On Thursday, October 30th, 350 Peel middle and high school students and teachers spent the day networking and jumping right into environmental action at PEYA’s EcoBuzz Conference at Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School in Brampton.

The conference kicked off with a lively keynote address by youth inspirational speaker, Joel Hilchey. Students and teachers then participated in interactive workshops in the areas of: sustainable student leadership, local food, native drumming, green cleaning, costume creation, environmental education policy, bottled water, school yard naturalization and monitoring, global action on climate change, nature appreciation through art, and expressing environmentalism through spoken word.

Students got their green teams fired up by creating a school environmental action plan which they will work on throughout the year. Students wound down over a spoken word performance by RHYME and a student-made local dinner. Things got spooky with a Halloween costume contest, haunted house and the conference wrapped up with a murder mystery game in the evening.

Schools are reminded that you can call on PEYA throughout the school year to support you in your environmental actions, whether you invite us to attend a student club meeting to inspire the team, or run a waste audit at your school to kick start waste reduction campaigns, or if you want to come to out monthly meetings so we can help one another, celebrate our successes, and have FUN while we save the planet!

First Prize: Jenna Blakely, St.Paul's Secondary School, Gr.11
Photography "What's Old is New Again"
My picture came to me while I was walking in the field just across the street from Fletcher's Meadow High School. I saw the tree, and it was a different colour than any of the others- it was yellow. It really appealed to me, so I walked up close to the tree, about as close as I could get, and I saw that there were little pinecones on the branches. I knew if I got a close enough shot, and it was focused properly they would make a wonderful photo. The relationship shown in this picture expresses that between old and new growth in nature.

Second Prize: Ranjani Ravichardvan, Glenforest S.S., Gr.12
Pencil Sketch "Through Nature's Eyes"

I drew this picture to capture the ducks’ daily routine of drinking water and catching fish. The relationship between the duck and its abiotic environment can be seen. Also, I viewed this scene through the branches of a small maple tree – hence my title: “Through Nature’s Eye”.

Third Prize: Hee Jin Kim , Hillside Senior P.S., Grade 6
Water Colour Sketch "We Three Trees"

I chose the title “We Three Trees” because in real life we are all equal as one and no matte what size or colour we are, we are all equal. It’s like We Three Kings. We are all in the circle of life.

Fourth Prize: Tetyana Vodoviz, St.Martin S.S., Grade 12
Water Colour Sketch "Together"

When I painted this picture, I felt connected with nature. I noticed more details in my surroundings because I was trying to accurately reflect its beauty on the paper. I saw how the bees surrounded the plants, and how the Canadian geese swam in the pond, relying on it for food. I noticed much more colours and life exist in the environment.

Honourable Mention: Alana Ricos, Hillside Senior. P.S., Gr. 6
Water Colour Sketch “Carry on Through”

I chose “Carry on Through” because animals, trees, and every thing always lives through everything.

We are grateful to Tutored by Nature for running this contest.
