Meet The 2010-2011 PEYA Executive Council

Aisha Stewart

Aisha is going into Grade 12 in Fletcher's Meadow S.S. and is the co-chair in her environmental club, duly named: "Students Towards Environmental Protection" or "STEP" for short. Some of the things that she has accomplished through her club were: Earth Day garbage cleanups, holding Ecobuzz at her school, and cleaning up the local pond. Some of Aisha's passions include animal and human rights and she also has an interest in soccer and reading. Her future plans include studying towards a degree in Environmental Law or Environmental Science. In joining PEYA, she feels she has opened up the opportunity to meet other people that are like-minded and have the same environmental passion as her. On top of everything, she also volunteers at a senior citizen home!

Christine Yao

Christine is in the tenth grade at Gordon Graydon S.S. and is an active member of the Graydon Green Team. With her club, she has participated in bringing about ecoschools to her school, as well as collecting and recycling batteries and used electronics. Christine is passionate when it comes to drawing, archery, and the flute and is currently planning to become either an accountant or a teacher. Christine has joined PEYA in order to expand her knowledge of environmental issues and how to conquer them.

Jagriti Sharma

Jagriti is entering her final year in Stephen Lewis Secondary School and is painting a mighty track record as the president of “Green Revolution”, the school’s environmental club. Since the club’s debut in 2006, many educational events have been accomplished. Such events include fair trade cafes and vegetarian BBQs in order to teach students about fair trade and local product issues, art showcases during Earth Week, and frequent clean-ups of the woodlot near the school. The club has also hosted dead battery, electronic waste, anti-idling, and anti-plastic water bottle campaigns. Jagriti is planning to pursue a Health or Biomedical sciences degree to pursue her interest in the field of medicine and her passions include creating art pieces of various mediums, writing for the school newspaper or for the expression of personal opinion, as well as working with other volunteers and individuals towards a greater cause. In joining PEYA, Jagriti hopes to learn of environmental initiatives that other schools have undertaken as well as environmental issues in the community.

Karan Keshav Sindhwani

Karan is currently in grade 9 in John Fraser S.S. and has joined PEYA so as to gain valuable experience and knowledge on the environment in the community as well as global issues. Karan is an active member in his school’s environmental club and has helped it accomplish projects such as tree-plantings (on and off school property), hosting Ecobuzz, woodlot cleanups and stewardship, adopting 10 meters of the Trans Canada Trail, raising money for the WWF, and much more! Karan cleverly sum’s up his passions as “the three E’s”: Electronics, Environment, and Exercise and loves to spend his time with friends.

Lucas Krist

As a grade 9 student in St. Aloysius Gonzaga S.S., Lucas has decided to join PEYA’s environmental movement bright and early! He wants to be able to do more for the environment than simply watch it wither away as well as to educate others on our current environmental issues. Lucas is an executive member in “Green Scene”, the environmental club in his school, and has contributed to projects such as recycling, cleaning up litter, conservation trips, and turning off lights and computers. Some of his passions include electronics, RC airplanes, conservation, and environmental protection. And as a side note, Lucas was an Olympic Torch bearer and actually handed the torch to Hazel McCallion!

Moe Qureshi

As an aspiring writer, who's only in grade 11, Moe has accomplished some big goals and has set some even bigger ones. Moe is a senior leader in his environmental club "Charge!" at his school, Streetsville Secondary. The club has completed stream studies for water quality and biodiversity in Mullet Creek - after a cooking oil spill killed ducks in a local lake. They have hosted a native speaker on behalf of the reserve about water quality and the environment on reserves. He's planted native species at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) to replace invasive species: Honey Locust and Garlic Mustard. Charge! plans on leading more environmental studies, running an improved recycling program in the school, and raising awareness of global environmental issues that can be acted on locally. Moe plans on attending the G8/G20 summit as part of a United Nations youth delegation and wants to pursue a career in biomedical sciences and research. Moe gets his inspiration from E.O. Wilson and states that he joined PEYA to find innovative, fun, and hands-on ways to bring green spaces and living to our community in Peel.
